An Unexpected Hero:Doekey’s Lesson on Compassion

WOEKEY & DOEKEY SERIES. THREE

Fat Doekey

For a couple of days, the two friends, Woekey and Doekey, had not seen each other. Then, one day, from afar, Woekey spotted his friend Doekey walking towards him. “There you are, my good friend Doekey!” Woekey exclaimed, trying to compliment his friend, who seemed to have put on some weight after days of merriment that followed his owner’s daughter’s wedding. Doekey, it seems you’ve added weight,” Woekey continued, pouring out all sorts of positive compliments on his friend. Doekey, who had been receiving these praises as he walked towards his friend, smiled with an air of confidence. With swag, Doekey signaled his friend to stop talking as if he were an angelic messenger delivering a message.

Hussle To Be Rich

“Woekey! Woekey! Woekey! How many times did I call you?” Doekey asked. “Three times,” replied Woekey “In all your dealings,” Doekey continued, still exuding confidence, “in all your visions in this life, make sure you hustle to be rich. “Woekey asked, “Why do you say so? “Doekey replied, “Thank you so much, my good friend, for the question. These past few days of the wedding ceremony have shown me what it means to be rich, how rich people enjoy their money, and how money gives you confidence in the presence of people.

“Doekey explained that his rich owner had shown off his wealth during the wedding, and there had been plenty to eat and drink. It had been so extravagant that Doekey had stopped eating. “You mean you rejected food, you, of all people, who love food more than your own life?” Woekey asked in amazement. “Yes, my dear good friend Woekey, I did,” answered Doekey. “The food was so much that my stomach couldn’t contain it anymore.” The two best pals spent more time discussing the wedding experiences, with Woekey listening keenly to Doekey’s tales of being in the midst of rich people. When they grew tired of the conversation, they decided to take a walk in the cool evening.

Terrifying  Robbery Experience

“That would be a long walk, Doekey, going all the way around the farm. Instead, let’s take this shortcut; it will save us half an hour,” Woekey suggested. Doekey hesitated but eventually agreed, saying, “You know, Woekey, I could use the long walk. If I don’t work on shedding some weight, I might not be able to perform my donkey job when duty calls.”

As they navigated the narrow, winding shortcut at Woekey’s insistence, a chilling discovery awaited them. A man, well-dressed and riding a magnificent horse, was locked in a fierce struggle with a group of robbers. The fight seemed evenly matched at first, but the tide turned as the robbers overwhelmed the lone rider. They stripped him of his possessions and unleashed a brutal beating, leaving him sprawled unconscious in a growing pool of blood. Even his horse, overcome with fear, had abandoned him, vanishing into the hills.

Doekey and Woekey hid in a nearby bush to avoid being seen. Terrified, they watched as the man was brutally beaten. When the robbers left, the two friends cautiously tried to approached the injured man, and Doekey recognized him as one of the rich men who had attended the wedding. As they were about to come out of hiding, two of the robbers returned to further harm the man and take whatever they had missed the first time.

Disappointments

Doekey and Woekey retreated back into hiding, but they were close enough to witness the helpless man lying almost lifeless. They were torn between continuing their journey and running away, but the fear of the robbers and their compassion for the dying man kept them in place. Finally, they spotted a member of the Sanhedrin approaching. “There comes a member of the Sanhedrin,” exclaimed Woekey. “I’m sure he can help this dying man.”

To their amazement, the member of the Sanhedrin appeared even more terrified and walked past the half-dead man with his hands covering his eyes, as if he didn’t want to witness the horror. Both Woekey and Doekey watched in utter amazement as a Pharisee, a priest, and many other members of the religious elite walked past the injured man. Some pitied him, some believed he deserved his fate, and some considered their own destinations more important. But none stopped to help. Still in hiding, the two friends watched as life gradually slipped away from the injured man. As they considered whether to continue their journey or run back, they saw a rugged and unfriendly-looking man approaching.

The Good Samaritan

“Hey, Woekey, be quiet and stay still. There’s a man coming. Maybe he can help,” Doekey whispered, signaling Woekey to remain hidden. “That’s a Samaritan, my friend,” Woekey replied. “Haven’t we lived long enough in Jerusalem to know that Jews and Samaritans are staunch enemies? Jews hate Samaritans so much that they consider themselves ritually unclean after a slight contact with one. If the religious Jews couldn’t be bothered to help their fellow Jew, what makes you think this Samaritan will?” “Yes, I know, Woekey, but let’s just wait for him to pass, and then we can go. Is that okay with you, at least?” Doekey said, still whispering out of fear of being noticed.

As Woekey was about to reluctantly agree, Doekey quickly hushed him and pointed towards the scene. To their surprise, the Samaritan didn’t hesitate. He dismounted his horse, knelt beside the injured man, and began tending to his wounds with great care and compassion. Doekey exclaimed, “You see, Woekey! I told you! I told you to be patient. I’m glad the man didn’t die before our very eyes.”

“But, Doekey, I don’t understand,” Woekey said, his face filled with confusion. “Why did the Samaritan help him, of all people, when not even his fellow Jews or highly religious people did? It’s perplexing.”

Doekey Speaks:

“Doekey spoke solemnly, “This is a perfect definition of being a good neighbor. Woekey, my good friend, I need to change my perspective. Being rich is not the ultimate goal in life. What matters is the legacy we leave behind and the impact we make on the people we come across, whether we are rich or poor. What this man did will echo from generation to generation. “The kindness he passed on to this man will move from generation to generation. Tomorrow, do you thing the wounded Jew will ever consider a Samaritan unclean? It is a very difficult lesson to learn my dear good friend but it is one we must take home, emulate and constantly show

Now Pay Heed to this

Jesus taught the importance of loving God and loving our neighbors as the two greatest commandments. A teacher of the law once asked him, “Rabbi, who is my neighbor?” To illustrate the concept of a neighbor, Jesus told a story known today as the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29–37): A man going from Jerusalem to Jericho is attacked by robbers, stripped, and beaten. A priest and a Levite pass by without helping, but a Samaritan stops to care for him, takes him to an inn, and pays for his care.

So My dear child, who is your neighbor? It’s not just the person living next door or your close friends; it’s anyone in need of your help. The story of the Good Samaritan teaches us that sometimes, even when others might pass by, it’s our duty to help those in need. Be a Good Samaritan whenever you can, and your deeds will echo from generation to generation.

Be a Good Samaritan:

  • At home, when someone is in tears or when the workload is overwhelming – kindly help
  • At work or school, when tensions rise or someone needs help – Kindly help
  • At the playground, when someone is injured – Kindly help
  • On the roadside, when you encounter beggars—offer help or a kind word or a prayer
  • At the hospital, when a loved one, friend, classmate, or colleague is sick- Kindly help

Special blessings await those who follow the example of the Good Samaritan.

 Remain blessed always.
