Couples and Sacrifice: A Path to Spiritual Growth

Bible Studies For Couples

Verses Of The Day

Romans 12.1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.

James 1.12  – Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him

Becoming A Sacrifice

Lazarus departed from life and entered heaven. However, observing the rich man’s lifestyle, we understand that Lazarus, in his suffering, surrendered everything to God as a sacrificial offering, contrasting with the rich man who reveled in his wealth and authority. Similarly, Joseph maintained his purity despite threats, choosing intimacy with God over the pleasures offered by Potiphar’s wife. Even in prison, facing unjust trials and potential abandonment by God, Joseph’s unwavering faith and endurance became a sacrifice. His perseverance, suffering, and humility ultimately led to his elevation to the second-highest position in Egypt. This narrative parallels Jesus’ experience of unjust trials, public humiliation, physical abuse, and verbal insults, all of which he endured without protest, as prophesied in Isaiah 53:7. Jesus’ prayerful acceptance of God’s will in the garden of Gethsemane and his subsequent sacrifice became the means through which humanity finds redemption. Indeed, just as Joseph was exalted to a position of honor. Philippians 2:9-10 describes God’s elevation of Jesus to the highest honor imaginable. It paints a vivid picture of every knee bowing and every tongue confessing Jesus’s lordship, all of which glorifies God the Father in the highest.

Jesus The Ultimate Sacrifice

In ancient times, God required animal sacrifices for righteousness. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross ended this need, ushering in a new covenant. Now, God seeks our obedience and communion, not blood offerings. Like Joseph’s steadfastness, we’re tested by God’s Word. What sacrifices do we make for His teachings? God’s blessings surpass material gifts; His presence is the greatest. Moses knew this, insisting on God’s presence over miracles. The Shekinah journeyed with them, sustaining them for forty years. Unlike temporary blessings, God’s presence endures. His companionship, like a mother bird, shields us. Yet, it requires our sacrifice—following His ways, honoring His commands, and valuing His presence above all.

As Couples What is Your Sacrifice?

The question remains: What are you willing to sacrifice? What offering can you present to God? It could be the unwavering commitment to purity, both inwardly and outwardly, living a life free from immorality. For married individuals, the allure of extramarital affairs can be exceptionally tempting. Yet, resisting such temptations and maintaining fidelity can be a sacrifice offered to God.

  • Forgiveness is another profound sacrifice, especially in the face of deep hurt within a relationship. When your partner pushes you to your limits, choosing to forgive and let go of resentment can be a sacrificial act presented to God.
  • Sometimes, following God’s ways might lead to isolation from your social circle, as you prioritize His commandments over societal norms. In such instances, embracing this separation as a sacrifice for God’s sake can be a meaningful offering.
  • Financial struggles and hardships often test our faith and integrity. While it may be tempting to compromise on God’s commands for material gain, enduring such difficulties with faith and righteousness can be a sacrifice honored by God.
  • The challenge of childlessness can shake the foundations of a marriage, leading to suggestions contrary to God’s will from well-meaning but misguided sources. Overcoming these pressures and staying steadfast in God’s ways despite external influences can be a powerful sacrifice offered to God.

Regarding The Marriage Institution

The institution of marriage is sacred, revealing God’s love, submission, and commitment. It serves as a platform for divine messengers, as seen in the lives of prophets. Upholding its sanctity requires adherence to rules, including the principle of sacrifice. The Bible emphasizes unity in marriage, symbolizing a living sacrifice. Resisting worldly temptations reflects this sacrifice, inviting God’s presence into the union. Furthermore, selfless acts, kindness, prayer, fasting, and love exhibit a couple’s dedication, even amid worldly challenges, pleasing God the most.

As It Affects The Next Generation

  • When a married couple embodies forgiveness, upright living, and unwavering devotion to God, their actions deeply impact their children. These qualities are like seeds planted in fertile soil, taking root and blossoming into virtues within their offspring. Children raised in such an environment learn the profound art of forgiveness—not just as a concept but as a lived experience, where hurts are healed and relationships restored.
  • Moreover, the atmosphere of upright living in the home becomes a natural habitat for love to flourish. Children witness and absorb this love in all its forms—unconditional, sacrificial, and boundless. They learn to extend love even in challenging circumstances, echoing the divine love that permeates their family.
  • Selfless service is another attribute that becomes ingrained in the fabric of their upbringing. The parents’ example of serving others without seeking personal gain becomes a guiding principle for the children. They understand that true fulfillment comes from giving of oneself for the benefit of others, mirroring the selflessness of their spiritual journey.
  • In embodying these virtues, the children become living reflections of God’s presence within their family. Their actions, attitudes, and choices radiate the essence of divine love, forgiveness, and service. This transformative influence not only brings joy to God but also serves as a beacon of light for their peers and future generations, setting a high standard of character and faithfulness.

Prayer

Lord, grant us the strength to bear each other’s burdens and prioritize the needs of others. Embolden us to share our faith openly, and fortify our character so we remain true to our beliefs. Bind us together, separate us from negativity, and prepare our hearts and minds to serve You faithfully. May we become a living sacrifice that attracts your fire which burns out all manner of immorality and make us pure before you. Amen
